Energy

Montana has some of the richest energy resources in the country.  In order to tackle America’s increasing energy demand we need to look at all options.  I support a four point plan to successfully meet our energy demands in an environmentally responsible manner.

First we need to utilize traditional fossil fuels.  Montana has an abundance of oil, coal and natural gas.  We need to look into expanding our markets domestically and start using more of what we have.  If we truly want to stop our dependence on foreign oil we need to nurture our local assets.  America relies on 56 percent of its oil supply from foreign countries.  By expanding our traditional resources domestically we can end our addiction to foreign oil, keeping our money out of hands of countries that stand against the American way of life.

Second, we need to advance our technology so we are able to produce more with less in a manner that doesn’t negatively impact our environment.  Right here in Big Sky Country technology is being developed that will help Montana move energy production into the 21stcentury.  Clean coal is a perfect example of how Montana can lead the way into energy independence.  Right now 60% of Montana relies on coal to produce energy.  By making technology safer and more efficient, we can meet the growing demands for energy in our country, with less.

Third, we need to develop alternative forms of energy production like wind, solar, biofuels, geothermal etc.  In Congress I helped co-sponsor the 25 by 25 initiative.  The bill establishes the goal that by 2025 no less than 25% of our energy consumption will be provided by renewable energy from U.S agriculture, forestry and working land.  This will not only help us meet our growing energy demands but also provide new job opportunities for Montanans.

Finally, we need to invest in technologies that will help move America forward into more efficient energy production.  In short, we need to get better at energy conservation.  By increasing funding for these technologies we can continually learn to do more with less.

Right now the policies of our federal government are negatively impacting the ability of America to lead the way in clean energy production.   As your Senator I will bring a common sense plan of balanced energy production.  America and Montana can lead the way, and I will work in the U.S. Senate to end our addiction to foreign energy once and for all.
